Your post points out some powerful ideas, Earl. Too many people think of SEO as trying to score first page for very broad terms, then they’re frustrated when it doesn’t happen…
Far better to find every long-tail keyword you can that’s being searched for and do a few blog posts based around each of those – often ranking 1st or 2nd for 10 or 12 long-tail keywords can get you as much or more traffic than anything else.

I completely agree with Doug. Another good technique for building up high visibility for long-tail keywords is to structure a week-long blog tutorial around 4-5 related ones. Ensure you have the ‘related posts’ wordpress plugin installed too; you’ll generate anchor links with keywords that way.

Lots of good additions to your content in the comments but the real key is to keep doing. It is the culmination of lots of little things that can make a huge difference in your rankings and is an ongoing thing.

Great advice! Too many people try too rank high for the popular keywords, when this will not work that well for most people, unless you have a lot of time (many months if not years) and/or money to spend doing it.

Yes climbing the ranks is important. Check regular and adapt you efforts to keep climbing. Try different things at different times.
