First let me tell you a little about why your web site might not be doing as well as you would like. The odds are that you either spent a lot or as little as possible on your web site.

Is your Web Site Invisible?

If you spent a lot, you may have all kinds of fancy animation on your main page, using what the computer programmers call flash. Flash is great. It allows a lot of creative and attractive web pages. There is just one problem, it's invisible to Google's little search bots and those of all the other search engines out there. And if they can't see your page, they can't rank it, and don't.

Was Your Web Developer a Techie or a Marketer?

If you didn't spend a lot, you may have created your own web site and/or hired it out to someone who took your specific needs and rearranged it into one of hundreds of different templates you can buy online for about $17 each.  Nothing wrong with that. There are tens of thousands of helpful web site builders in the world today, who learned how to copy and paste graphics, into acceptable to great looking web pages. 

Many picked up their skills in school, others taught themselves. But while they learned how to do the technical end of web site building, most have never had a class in marketing.  And since most of their customers don't know what they really need to get ranked in the search engines, they have never been forced to learn. 

The result is that they skip some things that could make your site rank higher. It's a case of not knowing it was important. Unfortunately it's your wallet that bears the brunt of their ignorance.  Would you like know what they could have and should have done?

Two Major Battlefronts You Must Win

There are two major categories of things you need to do to get your web site ranked high in the search engines. These are referred to as "on page" and "off page" factors in internet marketing circles.

In the final analysis, in competitive markets its the "Off Page" factors that matter most.  But if you don't have the "On Page" elements taken care of, it could take two or three times as much "off page" effort to have the same benefit.

The on page elements are relatively simple to incorporate, if you know what to do. And that is the primary reason I wrote the ebook,

You Need Back-Links

I also discuss how you can win the competitive Off Page battle for top ranking in competitive market places. Now the "off page" factors  elements boil down to needing back-links directed to your site. You want these to be coming from a lot of different places, and ideally "Important" and "Relevant" places. This gives your site credibility in the eyes of the search engines. Thankfully there is a lot you can do to generate these back-links.

The good news is that for many locally based small businesses it's not too hard to out compete your competitors for back links - if you know what you are doing and apply a consistent plan. That's because most of your competitors are in the same boat as you are. Too busy running the rest of your business to bother with this internet marketing stuff. 

That can be either your Achilles Heel, or your advantage. The good news is that most of what you need to do to gain the advantage in terms of offline factors is low cost or free, although it does take time and discipline.

Avoid Black Hat Tactics

Now be forewarned that there are a number of "Black Hat" techniques that promise to generate a lot of back-links overnight. And many of these do seem to work for a while. But the folks who run Google and the other search engines are pretty smart and usually catch on to these techniques. They tend to penalize sites that try to "game" the system. Thus for most businesses, it's better to stick with the generally accepted approaches and shy away from those who promise overnight success.

Who's on First?

So if you want more customers to find your business you want your listing to be where they look on top of page one or as close as possible.  Unless you do it, your competitors will, sooner or later, and when they do they will be getting customers you could have served and profited from. If they are already there, you have your work cut out for you.

And when you think about the lifetime value of a new customer, that could be very expensive.
